Encaustic Painting

February 8, 2016 Gayle Barklie

As a practicing artist, I love teaching others some of the interesting techniques I've worked with.  My favorite medium is called "Encaustic Painting"  which is an ancient technique utilizing hot wax mixed with pigments.

The wax is hot as you paint with it, and when it cools it gets transparent.  You can layer color over color to create some really interesting effects.

Encaustic painting actually began in 700 A.D. as a decorative way to patch boats.  It was almost a lost art until it re-emerged in the 1970's by Jasper Johns.  Unfortunately, when he began experimenting with it, the materials were quite toxic.  However, nowadays it is completely safe and a really fun way to express yourself!

I've made several different "mandalas" utilizing this technique.  I frequently use mandalas as a focal point to help me do into a meditative state.  I would love to show you how to do that as well!

I was invited to teach an encaustic painting class, so of course I said yes!  The three week series starts Saturday February 13 and then February 20th and March 5th from 10-12.
